My little Preying Mantis friend

Van life over

I booked into a hostel.
Why?
Coz Sheila is sold!
S'true. No more sleeping in a van, which I'll miss. But it's nice to have a bed to myself again.
It's such a novelty to have me own space.
In Cairns and it's raining at the moment. We were goin' ta do a dive tomorrow but if it's gonna be this dark outside we probably won't.
Flying to Sydney Friday night, and then leaving Oz Monday morning for Asia.
Wahoo!

Well I'm hungover right now, as it was Tims last night in Oz last night. He left early to catch his flight, but being good friends, we drank to him well into the night.

Anyway I'm gonna go back ta bed, chat ya'll later.
Oh yeah, as of next monday, my old Irish number will work again:

Bums and Bumchums

If we were to leave Cairns today, and someone asked us "So what did ye do in Cairns?"
The reply would be "Do you know the lagoon on the waterfront? Yeah, we spent most of our time in the carpark beside that"
It's true, we've even been sleeping there the last couple of nights, although last night we got woken up by security. We had left a wine bottle outside so he didn't ask us to move, as they can't legally ask you to move if you've been drinking. So there's a tip for any travellers.

Here's some interesting things you might not be interested in:

1. During the 2006 Commonwealth Games back in Melbourne, they got all the bums and Abbos and put them up in hotels around the city for entire duration on the games. Once over, they were all back on the street corners.

2. The other day we were cleaning out Sheila, I took out my board and left it on Alfs bonnet. After a few hours downtown I remembered it, I ran back to the carpark (Yes, the lagoon carpark) and it was still there. What a bloody arsh.

3. We stopped in a great winery on the way into Cairns called Murdering Point Winery, they deal in wines from fruits other than grapes, such as passonfruit, mango, davidson plum and a few other bush fruits. They had a few amazing ports as well. Some gorgeous wines I tell ya.

4. Blurtie lost the last key of the van, and since I lost mine too, we've got to use a penknife to start it until we get to a toyota dealer.

5. Before the lagoon carpark, we found a rest stop about 10k out of Cairns. We've always stayed in these, as they are free and usually empty or have some truckers passing through, which can be good craic.
But this particular one, this was different.
We drove down the entrance into it, and were met with quite a nice park surrounding the carpark, toilets were supplied too. But alot of cars were there too.
Alot of people seemed to just be sitting in there respective cars.
It had left my lips before the wheels had pulled into our car space for the night..."Bender Creek" - I said, in a voice of slow realisation.
Here's what we've gathered from observign them:
OK you pull up and wealk along past the cars, sometimes with a lighter under your face, to show whats on offer I guess. Then if someone from one of the cars is interested, they flash their lights for a second. The walker continues along the carpark, over to the line of trees, and proceeds down the edge like a tightrope walker. A minute later, said light flasher emerges from the car, and follows suit.
Also parking faced in means something other than facing lights out. We are not fully sure, but here are some thoughts on it: It means you're taken/waiting for someone in particular. It means you've brought someone. It tells if you are a giver/taker. EEwwwwwwwwwww.
All the theories proved to have some weight.

Anywhoo, after an undisturbed night of disturbing scenes, we decided Bender Creek wasn't that bad, and that a second night wouldn't be such a bad idea, it's certainly better than paying $25 each for a hostel.
So back we went, seeing the usual scenes again, and some of the usual suspects as well.
All was going fine, until I went for a pee in the middle of the night.
My pee break coincided with Blurtie Aherns middle-of-the-night-chocolate-feast-break, which she also has to get out of the van for, to get into the front seat, where the chocolate is stored.
Halfway through an abnormaly long pee, a muster of cars speed down the relief road, a procession of fifteen cars swing round the bend and end up with lights on me, peeing.
A chorus of hoots, wolf whistles and general shouting was blaring from the line of windows shadowed by the beaming row of headlights.
"Great" I thought "It's the gay parade"
I heard Blurtie freaak out and run inside the van, locking the door in the process.
"Shit" I thought again "These aren't gay, they're here to beat up gays"
I took a step back fom myself, standing there, a pair of hippie shorts and nothing else.
"How am I going to explain I'm just camping, and not camp"
Well I made my way back to the locked van, and after some muffled coaxing by Macleod, Egbert calmed enough to let me in. By this stage I was starting to freak out myself. I've been told of gangs here on the east coast, and I've a bit of knowledge of mob mentality.
Well from our poor view through a slit in the windows, we saw them circle a car at the top of the carpark, blocking the exit in the process.
I was busy hurling stuff from the front into the back, so I could start to drive off if they come down for us.
"Phone the police" says Macleod, who was staying quite calm, apart from the odd swear followed by an update from the poor view through the slit in the window.
Despite full coverage on my phone, it wouldn't connect. But at least we know now, to be prepared for handling situations yourself in Australia, because the emergency number is on hiatus.
A bang, followed by roar from the crowd echoed outside.
We noticed then that all but one of the midnight flashers had gone.
"What the feck is goin' on?"
Eventually we discovered they were burning out an old car, and after a good bit of engine noise and general Tom foolery, they took their boy racer cars and promptly left, expecting the police no doubt, but not aware they are out for a chinese.

We never went back to Bender Creek.

Rumours and Reaching the end

Rumour has it that I'll have money in my account next week. I'm so happy to finally get a loan through. Six months after I first started working on getting one! And I suppose it's slightly ironic that my "Australia loan" comes through at the end to fuel Asia.

We're in Cairns.
We're finished.
We're not really, but this was the set path for The Great Roadtrip, which consisted of Perth to Cairns. And it's over, but we intend to go a bit further north over the next week or so and then back down to here.
We did it, it was one of the best experiences of my life. From learning to surf, to learning to juggle, to attempting things I never thought I would do. It's been great.
It's also got rid of a few of my hang-ups. Especially food related ones! Hehe

I've no camera to put up photos and the like, but I'll do all that before I leave.
Right now I've been doing the ad with Bertie for selling her van. Fingers crossed!

I'll put up some more when it doesn't take all night!

This person is half way between me and that Tawny Nurse Shark down there! Sorry about the picture quality.

The Good. The Bad. The Story.

So lets get the bad outa the way:
Despite going into several internet cafes, across two cities of sorts, I can't upload photos for ya'll. They all hve one problwem or another. I've got some great ones too, got ones of us 25metres below the sea out on the reef! Not the best quality you've ever seen, but who cares!

Poor Blurtie Ahern(The latest incarnation of the nickname saga) dropped her camera into a very deep puddle, stay tuned as to whether it will turn on again after it dries out...

Onto the good!
Macleod booked his flight, he's flying to Kuala Lumper (That's in Malaysia) on the fourth of July, arriving early morning on the 5th. Flying out of there on the 21st of August, staying the night in Jordan! Then home on the 22nd. I'm sorry that's a lie. He's into England on the 22nd, who knows if he'll get out of that God forsaken hellhole and back to the rolling hills of Scotland.

The Story so far....
Tim is leaving Oz on the 28th June, well he's confirmed the date, but he's on a waiting list, so we've gotta get to Cairns soon to sell the cars, as he'll need to be in Sydney by the 27th. Best o' luck Tim! You bloody arsh.

I got my tax sent off, so hopefully that'll come back early August.

I should really say where we are.
We are on Townsville.
It's like Cork, with a humid feel to it, and half the shops are for sale.
We've ta hang around until tomorrow for Macleods paper tickets to come, then blitzing it to Cairns, which is about four hours north of here, and back into an internet cafe to print out posters for selling the cars.

We went to Airlie beach.
We left Airlie beach the next day.
Ibiza down under.

Maybe that's a bit harsh.
Nah, it's not.

We stopped here and there for this and that, but nothing significant. Unless you like large plastic fruits, by large we're talking thirty foot. I don't understand this fruit deal.

I wanna go bowling.
I wanna go to the cinema.
So does everyone else.
I wanna take up the shop down the road on its "All you can eat pancake" offer.
I wanna play some music with Sam too, twas great craic havin' the music everyday.

My advice if any of you come to Oz: Go to Agnes Water, and Western Australia.
But the locals in Agnes don't want anyone knowing about the surf.
So Agnes has no surf.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......

I'm currently searching for a flight online from Cairns to Sydney for the 30th of June.....
Be right back....
Damn credit card declined....
Just borrow Smeels for a sec....
Sucker....:)
Excellent!
It's booked, I'm officially leaving Cairns at 7.15PM, and getting into Sydney just after 10.00PM.
Tis great ta have that done.

Come on loan!!!!

Tim and Smeels are here busy putting Alf on ebay, hopefully we all get sold up in time ta go.

I'm off now to buy musical instruments with this newly acquired credit card...

Leaving Las Agnes

Tis Thursday.
We aren't actually leaving 'til 7.00AM Saturday morning, but tomorrow will be spent on the Great Barrier Reef, completing the last two dives of our advanced course.
As a result, we've packed up our wonderful home at the campsite, and are crashing at the house of Will.

Here's some interesting things over the past week or so:

1. During the night dive, Tim and Macleod saw a Blind Shark! Which, oddly enough, was the least dangerous thing we saw out there...

2. Cathy. Poor Cathy. She has so many nicknames now. Here's how they progressed:
Eggy Cathy (Due to a fart in the car months ago at Phillip Island, Victoria)
Egbert
Egbert Ramsbottom
Eggbog
Eggbog Ramchunkin
Eggpot
Egblurt
Egblurtina
Egbertina (You think we would have got this one earlier eh?)
The Blurtmeister
Eggbot
- Now!
The Blurtmeister is Eggbogs favourite though. Egbert is the standard though

3. When Egbert was cleaning the windows of Sheila the other day, a Tiger Snake brushed by her leg! She didn't panic or jump, and he just went on his merry way!

4. Myself and Tim went for a night surf. I'm so happy I did this, it was one of the highlights so far. On our last full moon in Oz, we took advantage of the bright night, and went out into the surf at dusk, watched the sunset, and shtuck around in there for a few hours. Magic

5. Whilst catching a meaty wave the other day, I surfed through a big surf school, to hear the instructor roar out "Everyone watch, there's a surfer coming through!" and they all hop out of my way and observe. Well it was a great moment for me :)

6. I fell asleep last night during a really big Aussie rugby match, they won't let me live it down, I even started snoring, which I don't ever do, I think it was all the beer!

7. We were out surfing with a pro surfer the last two days. Nice guy as well, which is cool.

So here's the plan:
We've two and a half weeks left in Oz.
Which is crazy.
The stops on the coast, in order are are: Airlie Beach/Whitsundays, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation. If we can fit it, Yeppoon and surrounds as well, which is just above Agnes here.

Smeels needs to do a sky dive.
We need to get to Cairns and advertise the van and car.
We need to post shtuff home.
We need to book a flight from Cairns to Sydney.
I need to see the Blue Mountains when I get to Sydney, and post a box home.

My time is up here now.

Goodbye Agnes!
I loved it here.
I will hopefully come back some day.

Take care all!

I wasn't the only one looking out at the surf this morning. Posted by Picasa

Tim, finding new uses for his hair when cleaning up camp. Posted by Picasa

Earlier today when packing up our home for the last month.Left to right: Tim, Smeels, Clunes, Eggbot, Lisa (Doing the face) Mary, Bushman Tim with Outback in his hand, and that's K C on the ground looking at all of us. Posted by Picasa

Bushman Tim gave us a present when we left the campsite. An auld Guinness tap, which got cabled tied on the front Roobars of Alf. Good ol' Tim Posted by Picasa

So after finally leaving Workmans Beach campsite, I wondered, where the hell did all this crap come from??? Posted by Picasa

The new board that Sam and Will are working on. It was an old board, about two foot longer! Posted by Picasa

Will giving Shadow a good scratch. Will is 6'5", so you can imagine how big that beer is... Posted by Picasa

Yes it is a microwave nailed to a tree stump. Alot of the time, mostly in rural areas, Aussies recycle fridges and other appliances as post boxes. Fair play ta them! Posted by Picasa

Diving and drenching

I take it all back.
Everything about the pathetic efforts of the lads spearfishing, I take it back.
After returning home the last day I posted, Sam had caught some beauties: A 5kg Coral trout, and a meaty flathead.
Some Coral Trout facts:
1.One of the most expensivce fish to catch here.
2. Due to it's high price, restaurants don't stock it here (About $60 per kg cost price)
3. Australia ships all caught Coral Trouts to Japan, where they can afford them.
4. It has luminous blue dots on it, and can range from red to brown in colour.

Well my beautiful new board went out for it's third day of surf, and got smashed by a learner.
Here's some irony:
I got cut off on a wave, thus breaking the board off someone. Who? The guy who was supposed to buy my old board.

Nice guy though, I got him to pay for a kit to repair it, which is a tenth of the price of repairing it, and Sam taught me how to repair it. So something good came of it!

I sold my old board!
Trigger is gone, but will always be in our hearts and thoughts.
Long live Trigger!

We enrolled for the advanced dive eventually, and did three of the five dives:

The first being a night dive - Crazy. I would recommend it, however everything that swims at night here, will kill you, either by venom, or brute force.

The second, a nav dive - With and without compass, good craic, myself and Macleod did great. Tim and Smeels did shite - ah no they didn't, they just took their sweet time!

The third was a drift dive - Less effort, which is nice, just letting the current take you. We got in in the middle of an erractic shoal of fish, twas eerie, as you were just being dragged by the current, whilst a torrent of fish hurtled around you.

The last two dives are a deep dive, and a naturalist dive, which are being done out on the Barrier Reef, but due to bad weather and wind( It rained all day one of the days there, weird to see grey skies like that again) we've had to wait for days. We might just have to leave soon!
Speaking of running out of time.
Time up here.

Drying off after a surf. That's Will sitting up against the post. A dutchie in fornt with the camera. Erin in the pink. Team Frenchies over at their yellow van, and of course, good ol' Sam, Stef and Egbert on the grass too. Posted by Picasa

Chillin' in Wills house afterwards, it's such a cool hangout spot. He built it himself, I could go on about it for ages but I won't. Posted by Picasa

A bit of a jam by the fire, I love this part of the day. Tis great having Sam around to jam with. Posted by Picasa

This photo is deceptive, due to the long grass. The Roo on the right is taller than me, his arms are thicker than mine, his fingernails are probably dirtier than mine (Maybe) I sure as hell wouldn't enjoy a thump from him. Posted by Picasa

My board. My beautiful board. I was gutted, but I'm over it now. Posted by Picasa

And so we got to work on Rosie... Posted by Picasa

That'll do! Posted by Picasa

Check out the Aboriginal art on Team Frenchies board...The detial is amazing, the photo doesn't do justice. They are two talented Frenchies, between music and art! Posted by Picasa

Do you remember this book Nellie? Posted by Picasa

"What's Bean doing?" I hear you ask.... Posted by Picasa

He's petting a Huntsman. Please excuse the fingernail, we live on the beach so there's always something under your nails :) Posted by Picasa

Of course Sam had to go one further and lick the damn thing. What an arsh. Posted by Picasa

That's Bushman Tim - what a cheesey photo of him, and Julia at the music night. Tim can live on nothing in the desert. Hardcore... Posted by Picasa

The little black blob in the water on front of the instructor is Tim and Smeels doing some drills for the advanced diving course. The reason Macleod and I are already out of the water is because we were so good, we finshed everything in half the time!  Posted by Picasa

Our sunrise was a bit spoilt by the clouds, but we did get a good pallet of colours anyway. Posted by Picasa

If you look really hard at the end of the rocky outcrop in the centre of the photo , you might be able to make out a tiny orange and white shape above the breaking wave. That was Tim and Smeels from their perch for the sunrise. Posted by Picasa
